Fuel additives, now more than ever

Post by Bruce »

I was talking to my injection pump rebuilder guy yesterday, someone I've done business with for 30 years.

What he is starting to see on new electronic injection pumps is extreme cam wear due to high lift. Most injection pumps have a cam just like your engine to work the plungers.

His source for regrinding the cams cannot do the new ones and many manufacturers are not supplying the cams as a seperate part making the end user handing over money for a whole new pump.

These pumps are just starting to trickle in the marine industry but are in use much more in over the road.

While I have always recommended an additive for any diesel, it is imperitive for long life and reduced costs to be using additives in todays diesels.

Bruce what do you think of adding 2 cycle oil. It's ashless and lubs high reving 2 strokes? If you think it is a good idea how much would you add per gallon?

Doug,
Either what Gerry or Dug suggested is fine.

Charlie,
Never tried it and I honestly couldn't give you an answer other than at the mix rate a 2 cycle requires to keep the oil from being too diluted and reducing the lube properties beyond usable benefits I would think it could increase engine smoking while most additives reduce smoking.

That oil smoking will build up carbon in the cylinders, a problem 2 cycle engines have which is not a good by product.
