I've been searching for an old post with process of painting over the old laminate and came across your post. Been a few years, how has the paint held up? If you were to do again, would you paint or laminate over?

Like a charm Carl. Sitting here on the boat now it’s hard to believe the finish is 6 years old. We usually boat with just the two of us aboard and we tend to take care of our gear but 5-6 weeks aboard every year is about half a year of life aboard and you’d expect to see some wear or degradation and I’m not seeing any. No cracks, no crazing and no “shows” where we filled and sanded a couple dozen fastener holes left by previous owners. I am very happy with the results.





If I had it to do over I would paint over again. Unless you employ an expert laminator I’m not sure you will get the complete coverage and clean edges of painting.

To answer your question to Bob about prep and paint choice we filled and sanded all unneeded fastener holes (be sure to mark the ones to keep and the ones to fill ahead of time, you will forget!), applied two coats of Interlux primer hand sanding in between coats and then two coats of Interlux Oyster White finish rolled and tipped. Interlux has a couple different finishes, I will look when back home.

Bob-Maybe “Easy Peary” for someone with your skills (and probably Carl’s) but a stiff job for someone like me. Still, it’s done and I’m very happy to have the new interior. BTW I think I mentioned it in an earlier post but I’ll repeat that Igot the original idea from one of your posts years ago. Thought about for years as is my way and then finally pulled the trigger in 2019. So thank you for showing me it was possible.

FYI, several years back I went to visit Cpt Pat after he had moved to Llano, TX. At that time he was doing a resto on Hancock’s 31 which was a Sportfish he was converting to a FBC which required installing cabin bulkhead and I noticed he had laminated what I call the old Formica over the top of 1/2” marine plywood so I asked why? Simple answer he said. Because now I have a perfectly fair, smooth surface. Hit it with some 80 grit and it’s ready for paint!

I think not. Definitely NOT FOR ME, I am a horrible painter at best.

I have done a couple project that I bust my butt on that came out ok. The cockpit floor with KiWI non slip which is a simple roll on with course roller for a rough pattern that melts in and blends. The other was the cockpit side panels with Interlux Perfection. That came out good because of the paint, not me. That and I laid the panels down flat on stands at the right height. A vertical wall...lol that is dangerous. But I may give it a go.

Everything I painted held up well so far three seasons and looks good still.i just sanded filled primed with awlgrip 545 and top coat awlcraft 2000.

Is that a sliding door going into the Head? If it is, Great idea.

The floor also looks great. What material did you use?

Yes sliding door. Kept the fixed section and added the slider over the front. The floor is seadek pulled off the old laminate and it’s glued right to the plywood hatches.

Originally was going to pull out the bulkheads for the head and redo in coosa. Which would have been easier for a finished look but everything was in such good condition it would have been a waste of time and money to gut it.

I talked to a couple of vendors at the AC Boat Show about Sea Dek and a couple of others. They all said it would not work on top of plywood. They said the wood holds moisture and it would eventually lift.

Glad to hear it worked for you.

Well I guess we will find out. The plywood is sealed, it’s not raw wood and my cabin is pretty darn dry. Check back in a few years.

Tony- I used the cheapest faux teak from ebay laid over painted plywood. I have not had a problem with it lifting as I go into my 4th season. Now staining...I'll have to wait to tell you on that till after I give a good scrubbing.

I figure the cabin is small enough to DIY it. I think I have another summer project. I just need to decide which product I should use.

looking at others I do see things I like better, like the teak boards are chamfered giving a nicer finished appearance in my opinion. Custom can offer some real nice detail trim. I think I also notice the better product (can be read more pricey) seems to be a tighter cell...not sure if that makes it better, less prone to staining or more robust.

I will check further. Right now, my time is being used up with Jury Duty. A 4-week trial that looks like it will run to 5. I already told the Marina it does not look like I am getting in until June.

This trial is so boring, we caught the Judge nodding off. LOL

So some guys in the boat yard have used the cheaper knock off seadek from Amazon or EBay. They all seemed to report it’s held up well but nobody had it for many years at this point.

A roll that you cut yourself wasn’t too much more since it’s not much square footage. I also didn’t go with a templated factory finishing. With boarders etc. since I haven’t done the dinette side yet I will have to buy more and didn’t have to worry about buying additional materials in advance so I know it matches. That was really the extend of my decision process. I wouldn’t be scared to try the generic stuff. Only time will tell.

Good to know Peter. I was not sure if they would sell it as a DYI. I will measure the boat out and give it a go.
