Bertram Parts

Hi Guys, I have dropped off this board for many years! I am now restoring another B31 for myself to use as my commuter boat in Bermuda. This will handle the elements more comfortably than the B25 I have been using for the last 20 or so years (I am a little older now). I am wondering if the old parts that used to be around still are, and where to get them these days?

My wish list:

-Oversized rudders and top bearings and arms with tie bar
-Capt Pat's original style side air intake boxes
-PVC and stainless rub rail
-An original B31 chrome gauge cluster panel
-Cabrera cockpit floor
-Bronze shaft logs and struts to accommodate 1.5 and possibly 1.75" shafts (repowering to Cummins Reman 370's)
-Original interior Bertram seating (I have seen pics of original tall helm chairs hinged to the gunnel inside the cabin?)
-Original large type Bertram steering wheel
-the steps that affix to the aft cabin struts/supports

Please let me know of any leads if anyone has any.

JJ

I got my oversized rudders from Bobby Soles propeller. The swivel sockets and tiller arms are standard parts from the Buck Algonquin catalog. I had a local propeller shop make a tie bar for me.

I have an original Bertram cluster panel but not sure if it’s chrome complete with gauges. Also have bronze shaft logs, not sure if they will accommodate 1.75” shafts. Currently out of town but will confirm when I return.

Not sure if you can still get the deck from Cabrera. Most the crew build their ownnnusing Coosa Board. The side intake air box is not available.

As mentioned Bobby Soles prop shop has the rudder pattern.

The cluster panel will be tough.

I have to see if I can find the information, but I had come across an outfit that made custom panels. Give me a day or two.

JJ,

On my way back this September I encountered real Bertram weather and one of the damages was that all the cluster with all gauges plus the steering wheel, fell onto my feet...
I took the cluster frame (after I removed all gauges) to my inox guy and he will copy-paste the frame with the exact gauge holes and retaining screw holes. He told me this is done by computer...he will then paint it electrostatically. I chose aluminum 4mm thick.

If you want to update the look and use the newer material try one of these outfits:

https://newwiremarine.com/custom-switch ... ers-guide/

https://www.grant3d.com/boat-gallery

http://www.deepbluemarine.com/custom-de ... leryID=131

https://www.boatoutfitters.com/custom-dash-panels

I have seen the Hollywood style dash in the newer material, and it looks pretty good. You could also get the Hollywood style in metal and have an insert of the newer material cut to fit. The original panel had a black insert. I redid mine without the start buttons since they were moved onto the dash bulkhead right under the steering wheel during the repower. I now have ignition keys also. The horn button I relocated also to another area of the dash.

Hey Guys thanks much. Are these made of aluminum of chromed bronze or brass?

Ok looks like I need the Hollywood panel like in the 3rd and 4th pics but where can I get one either original of fabricated? Would prefer an original in bronze I think they were?

Re: Bertram Parts

You would need to find someone who could fabricate one or find a 31 that is being redone and the owner does not want the original from the boat. Otherwise, I don't think you will find an original.

I would keep an eye on ebay because if one pops up for sale it would be there. Like this one I just found.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/132284677344?v ... 35ddf32dd8

Looks like the seller will make them to your dimensions.

C’mon guys, no one in their right minds would spend 6-800 for a panel like this. This brushed stainless or aluminium already exists in sheets, suffices to find a used panel to take dimensions of. The holes are custom anyway.

If you're so kind to PM I'll reply.
No probs for shipment; I'm collecting parts there to be shipped in a bulk here all in once.

Good to be back Rawleigh. Seems I can't kick the habit of buying/restoring Bertrams! This latest one I'll take the flybridge off (its only bolted on) and convert her to a sedan so I can get under the bridge easier. The 25 hardtop is fast but she isn't in some seas on the way to work!

Jeremy, just want to make sure this is the right one. Difficult to tell from the pics but underneath the black, is this the same metal plate as appears in pics on this post with the little scroll flourish at the top of the plate and a rolled border round the edge?

Sorry - it's the same shape - but does not have the raised lip or scroll

Re: Bertram Parts

The original dash is aluminum and with a raised lip around the edge. They used a black composite that fit in the center. The plate was not painted or coated in black. When we repowered the diesel shop had a new insert cut for me.

If you can get the metal Hollywood style in metal, just get the black composite cut to fit. New Wire Marine or one of the others should be able to do it for you.

Thanks Tony, The one on my FB 31 is is chromed bronze so I am holding out for one like that! The aluminium ones don't do it for me now as I can't "unsee" the bronze version!

Re: Bertram Parts

Posted: Jan 3rd, '24, 21:40
by Tony Meola
You are probably right; they might all be bronze. In any event, they all have the black composite insert. If yours is all chrome then someone removed the black insert and just left the metal showing.

Instrument panel on my 1969 Bertram. I think it is most likely original as I’ve had the boat for quite a few years and the two previous owners that I know were mostly interested in fish not boat work. The frame is chrome over bronze. Not sure what material the insert is but don’t think it is plated. The fit is perfect.
