Bertram 38?

What do some faithful mean by wide body? Is there a slim body too? I know there's a Special, but a wide body?

See if this link helps. The wide body was about a foot wider in the beam.

The earlier bigger Bertrams were not as quick as our little 31's and 28's so they went through several redesigns. The 35 and 38 were absolutely beasts in bad weather. They would just eat up the seas. The 54 is probably the best sea boat ever built.

Very interesting, Tony, thanks.

So, those who prefer the 38 II widebody, despite it being wet and slow (vs the 38 III version) do so for some reason.
What is this reason if speed, consumption, being wet, spartan etc. arent her strong points?

I thought the 38 wide bodies were the 38's built during the 70's and they were called wide bodies because they had a wider beam than the later model 38II and the 38III.I believe the 38II and the 38III have the same beam. There were other changes in the II verses III but the dimensions are the same. The wide bodies were a totally different hull. When the wide bodies were built they weren't referred to as wide bodies until the newer narrower 38's came out.

Yannis, here you go:

The first Bertram 38 was a flybridge cruiser built for a few years in the mid 1960s (but then discontinued).

1970-1976 Bertram 38 Convertible (2nd version): Length - 37'8"; beam 14'5"; displacement: 26,000 #

1978-1986 Bertram 38 III Convertible (3rd version): Length 38'5"; beam 13'3"; displacement: 30,400 #

1986-1987 Bertram 38 Special: same hull as the 38 III but displacement at 27,000 # due to express model (no house)

So the 1970-76 version is the one commonly referred to as a "widebody" due to the 14'5" beam.

And Buzz is correct; the "widebody" term came about in later years to distinguish the two versions.

Tommy,

That "digestion" was very practical. Thanks!

As pointed out in the link provided by Tony, the 1970-76 "widebody" B-38 is a Ray Hunt hull design and has a 22-degree deadrise aft (a true deep-V similar to Hunt's 31' hull). The 1978-86 B-38 is a Dave Napier designed hull with a 17-degree deadrise aft. So those who prefer the earlier "widebody" model may prefer it for the deeper V as well as the wider beam. If repowered with modern diesels the 38' widebody would surely perform as well, or better, than the later 38 III model.

Love that counter top.
What is it?

Thanks, Keven, the countertop came from lumber liquidators. It's 1/34 \ 24"/ 12' American red cherry butcher block. I put at least 10 coats of smiths penetrating epoxy and 4 or 5 coats of west with the uv protectant ,sanded to a fine fill, the a couple coats of sprayed satin varnish to allow quick repair. The point was to prevent red wine rings, works good. The only problem in the pic is the sink insert is upside down so the grain doesn't match. Flip it over its cool.
The 38 has that nice galley counter I thought it would work. You back conus?

I am back.
And LOVI'N being back in the states.

Boat should be shipped in the next few days.

Don't worry about the insert being backwards, my wife does that all the time as well.
(That's my story, and I'm stick"n to it) lol ;-))
No matter what she says.

Bill

Did lumber liquidators sell the edging also?. Looks like you put some type of molding on it so items would not roll off of it.

Tony, no edging at all, just offload stuff prior to getting underway.

Tony, to correct , the edge you see is a teak fiddle on a cabinet in the master where Bertram put another head. Excuse me dear I need to take a... We just put a cabinet there with a basket for dirty laundry. The head was silly, if you need two, lean against the gunnels.
