Mold Release Remover?

Post by scot »

I use multiple layers of paste wax on molds/plugs, etc. as a mold release agent. What is a good solvent to get the wax off of the finished piece? Something that is stocked at the local hardware store would be best for me, I'm ready to do some glass work and really don't want to order a speciality solvent if I can avoid it...xylene? acetone?

Scot,

Naptha is a good wax remover & should be available from either a good hardware store or paint supply chain. Follow up with warm soapy water & rinse.

If your hardware store doesn't carry it, your local Sherwin WIlliams store does...

Thanks guy's, we have a Sherwin Williams. That's typically where I find my toxins & various other nasty VOC's.

Naphtha

Scott, naphtha - and the "extra" h is the correct spelling, as my ex-boss kept impressing on me - is what most charcoal lighter is. Cheaper probably to buy it that way that as a speciality chemical.

I like it, That way if there is any left over from the mold clean up I can keep it around for startin' up the grill.

all kidding aside...when you pour high flash liquids like acetone they leave a vapor trail back to the container...which is also flamable....the flame will travel back and ignite the original container if it still has any liquid in it....not fun if you are still holding it................voice of experience..............................recently at the gas station this fella is filling gas cans while smoking a cigar......says "its ok....i'm a fireman"

This works as an alternative fuse if you run out of primer cord, or so I've heard. :)

One thing to keep in mind when using this stuff is that you gotta do a slightly different version of the old Mr. Miyagi-Wipe on, wipe offotherwise, you'll leave residue behind...
