New to me Bert 28

Post by Grande »

Hello i just got my new to me 28 bertram , it had a hiccup as they found zebra mussels on transducer and intake. and in Bilge. Boat is in Quarantine until it is decontaminated thye use a hot water pressure washer and go over the hull and anywhere water may sit. I also have to run 160F water through intake , sea strainers etc. My question is as i am new to inboards now that I have a couple of weeks on the hard what preventative maintanaice would you you preform?
The boat has twin 350s raw water cooled, bottom paint is ok I will repaint. What zincs do you add ? 2 on each shaft ? anywhere else ? it needs all the regular clean and polish etc new electronics the current ones are vintage 1977 not sure if they work or how.

Welcome

What you will need to do will depend on if you keep it in salt or fresh water. Salt water you need to look at risers and exhaust manifolds depending on age. Fresh water they last much longer.

Thanks boat is from Michigan so fresh water but I will be using in salt in Vancouver.
It will need to be switched to a closed system.
I found I think there is no how tank but looks like it was plumbed at one time and the waste system is probably best if I start from scratch starting with ball valve for water in take.

as far as zincs go there are different zincs
for fresh water and salt
I put 2 on each shaft
1 one each rudder
trim tabs if you have them
I also had a divers zinc on my transom
I think the fresh water zincs have more magmessium

I know zinc is not for fresh water use. Zinc in fresh water creates an insulating layer making it useless as a sacrificial anode.

Charlie is right, could be magnesium or even aluminum that is used for fresh...maybe a combo depending on salinity of the waters. Magnesium gets eaten up real quick in salt water.

You'll have to drill holes in the rudders for zincs. There will be anodes in the engines, the heat exchangers, and possibly the transmissions. Go on line and look for service manuals for your equipment.
