I'm sure the pvc is not 1969, so I'm guesing that is also part of the keel repair? Apologies for the filthy bilge, i haven't clean...

You should not have that dip in the keel. I assume that is the aft section. Possibly not blocked up correctly over the years and it formed a dip. Depending on just where it sat on the blocks. There are counter rotating GM based engines that use all standard parts except the timing chain is replaced with gears, and the crank runs opposite. Yes my Cummins are well within that range...but the boat being looked at I believe is a carbureted gas boat. Run it slow at 17-18 mph with tabs and light on fuel I'd burn 20gph. But at $275K when the boat is completed is about half of what a comparable new boat would cost. I'm OK with that. Plus my boat will be built much better than any production boat built. All good points. No doubt $275k will produce a fine fully restored beauty, i just don't think thats the entry fee ...

This fuel efficiency discussion begs the question of why anyone needs 740 hp on a Bertram 31? Amberjack is moderately overpowered with 630 hp and Carl pointed out sometime ago 240-280 hp is probably the optimum power range. Yanmar also has a 370 v8 that i haven't seen anyone use. Its a little heavier and doesn't spin as fast, but id love to hear performance and economy from either of these engines in a 31
