Use these switches. This link takes you to their Tef-gel page. Click on the "Pump Switch" tab on left side of screen. These are the Ultra Pump Switches.

http://www.wolfwire.com/tefgel/frameset.htm

Then pick your choice of simple bilge pump (w/o built in switch).

Yannis: What you are talking about is the liability part of the insurance. Unless you have a loan on the boat you are not required to have hull insurance. That is your risk. I don't even think you are obligated to have liability coverage like you are on a car, but you are a fool if you don't.

I use the same as Frank. If money was no issue I would use the one that has a single center pole and slides into a bracket on the transom. I have the bronze steps on the transom, but they are virtually unusable with the angle of the transom.

Generally I do not have much in the bilge. I have dripless stuffing boxes and the boat stays in a boathouse except for hurrican...

The original batteries were in a lidless fiberglass box similar to what is shown above to protect from flooding. If the water gets that high it is probably too late anyway.

My '66 came with them between the engines. It keeps the CG centered and low, but runs the risk of flooding them in an emergency.
