The marquetry can now be surfaced to the surrounding area and finished as necessary.

On my project, I decided to add an element of depth to further enhance the inlay.  I traced on an oval, and using a 1/47" wood chisel, cut away the background, bringing the marlin into a high relief.

The background was darkened down with epoxy and graphite powder.   Clear epoxy was then used to fill the entire area.
