Bertram 510 with V12 mans V V10s ???

Post by Todd Pearce »

I am lurking around looking at B510s to upgrade too, one boat i am looking at has V12 Mans at 1360 hp, I am nervous of MANs in the first place
Q 1 what are the V10 MANs like for reliability and service costs
Q 2 as above but V12s at 1360 hp
Are these old MANs going to bite me in the ass or are they ok???
any and all info greatly appreciated

Wow, a 51, nice boat. Sorry I have no experience with Man's but I hope it all works out for you.

Tony, after rebuilding mine i needed to get some fun back in return, but its been 7 years, and the kids are now adults and i really want a full size galley
ive looked at a viking, good boat, but my heart is in a Bertram, trouble is there`s not many for sale at the moment and for the age they are quite expensive, i don`t want to pay all that money then have to re power as well, would love to find one that`s had a re power to cats or mtu`s ,
anyway , i hope some of the captains here can chime in

Like Tony, I have no first hand experience. Best I can offer is dads close friend had several 48 Vikings with the last one having MANs before buying a 61. They loved the MANs, best performance, sipped fuel with very little problems over the few years he ran her. The boat did yearly trips from NJ to Florida, Bahama, the Keys Block Island so he put on hours. Service and maintenance he said was top notch…and it was one of the few times he would get serious saying it was expensive.

…again, not much more help then a bump up in the thread.

Good luck

Carl thats great feedback, picture i am getting is that servicing and major services are crucial and expensive but if done ,quite reliable

Did you try asking over on Boat Diesel. Someone over there might have some experience with the MAN Engines.
