Vic passed this morning very abruptly from a broken blood vessel. His passing was very quick and relatively painless.

A very sad day indeed...i spent the day wondering bout UV and grinding away on my 31...rest easy ...and keep an eye on the faithful...I raise a glass of JD single barrell to one hell of a guy...BH

Capt Pat, I'm very sorry to hear he has passed, but thanks for letting us know.

Mike, thanks for letting me know he was sick, it gave me a chance to say goodbye. It was good that UV saw the many lives he touched before leading us on to our next journey. That's a rare gift.

Like many here, I never met Uncle Vic, but he definitely made an impact on me. And from the notes here, he clearly has touched many lives. Rest in peace.

I had never met UV but hope to some day..... It's to bad another one of the good guys has been taken...

I am in total shock! What a loss to the world and to us all! I'm rarely at a loss for words but I sure am now. Rest in peace, my good friend...and you certainly were.

After Vic's second post, I thought there might be time to go up for a visit. If I can get everything together, I plan on going to Port Eads next week. Gonna have a Port Eads Irish Wake in Vic's honor, substituting clears for the whiskey.

Uncle Vic succeeded in the end just as he succeeded at life. He recognized that the end was near, and he took the opportunity to reach out to his family here on the Board and bid us all a fond farewell; and we were able to reciprocate back at him...........what a prince of a guy. Man, I miss him already, and there is a big void in my heart right now.

I've just come back from watching the USS Iowa pass through the Golden Gate headed out to sea for the last time...

And now I read this.

The world has changed, and we are the poorer for it.

My condolances to Elaine, Brett and the rest of his family. We lost one of the founding faithful today, I aways looked forward to his posts, enjoyed the hours sitting on the bench outside the big room at the flop house smoking cigarettes with him, enjoyed his passion for quality built boats, he would say that the 31` Bertram was the best boat ever built, today we lost one of the best people God ever built. RIP Uncle Vic.

Nothing but CLASS!! UV will be a hard act to follow.
I am grateful for the few times we got together.

Andre' and I spent Friday afternoon with Vic at his camp, and had dinner with him on Friday night. He kept his sense of humor until the end, but his long battle with cancer had taken it's toll and he was ready to move on. Little did we realize that in a few short hours he would.

Right now I'm sitting on the dock at Andre's camp looking across the canal at Vic's camp with his boat at the dock and remembering all the ways that Vic enriched my life and the good times we had.

i have to admit of all the things i heard him say the funniest one was when he was explaining to (name omitted) why he couldn't possibly win the UVI.

the man brought a lot of joy to a lot of lives. and like patrick, he was responsible for getting a lot of very very different people together on the same page. finest kind.

RIP UV, I will always miss your humor and the fun times.

The last message I got from him, a few days ago, was a picture of one of Mike O's wonderful UVI shirts, and the question:

"You live, you die - but have you ever fished the UVI?"

I replied that I indeed HAD, and was forever grateful to him for the opportunity to do so.

Expected then he knew the end was very near, really didn't want to check this board for conformation.

May you rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon you forever. I am wiser and happier in life for having known you.

Tennyson's poem feels particularly relevant when talking about UV. A life worth celebrating and those left behind are both richer and poorer for the incredible way he handled his death and his life. What poise and grace and wit. Well done Vic.

While I am so sorry to lose a friend...I have to say another part of me is so grateful that both UV and his family did not have to endure further cruelties of his affliction.

I do not see his act of throwing in the towel as giving up by any means...I see it like a Captain of a sinking ship, one who recognizes the inevitable and does what he can to comfort and save the ones around him till the very end.
He allowed his friends and family to say goodbye...I can only hope I have the being to be able to do the same before I move on.

...another lesson learned by the actions of UV.

I have been away from the computer all weekend. I am very sad to hear of Vic's passing, but I am glad that he went quickly and in peace.

Trey, I am glad that you and Andre got to spend some time with him Friday. I know that his loss will leave a hole in your hearts for a long time. God bless all of you and his family.
