What a difference a day can make...I cannot wait to see the last day!


My brand-new mufflers and hoses didn't look that new when I got them. They look like the item to circle, that does not fit the picture.

Hey you are right. I will see what size they are as I will be putting in a 6 inch system. If they are only 5 inch can they still work for that?

So I did my B25 myself when I was 22 years younger. It was a slog then so I am leaving this one to a local crew -but keeping a close eye on them!!

They look like the 5 inchers in mine, but measure, since pictures make it difficult to determine size. I believe once you go above 270 HP in Cummins, you need to go to 6 inches.

That first picture reminds me of a certain someone (who will remain nameless) who posted a picture of his project that had a tree growing out of the bilge. I can still remember Capt. Pat's reaction.

What was to be a Hatteras Express became a Hatteras planter called The Tub.

It's incredible how big a 31 can get when working on it. I'd hate to imagine something bigger with a larger scope of work, having limited time and budget. Ugh...a few times I thought about bringing flowers down and turning mine into a planter.


Gas motors and by the looks I'd say at best they are 5". Not enough for Cummins at the hp you were talking about. Cummins does not like back pressure.

Guy's while I have your attention. I will be putting the Cabrera FG cockpit floor back in her but will be replacing the subfloor supports with Coosa. What do guys think the minimum thickness of Coosa is that I can get away with assuming I will be trying not to laminate most of it?

3/4in on everything the stringers for the deck are 2 pieces of 3/4 in with 17/08 on both sides.

Also, I checked where my rudders are and was surprised to see that they overhang the transom by a good couple of inches! I will be replacing with oversized from high tide and bringing them forward.
Bob Lico posted that the rake of the rudders changes bow attitude up and down. I think he said that trailing the lower edge aft a bit raised the bow and trailing it forward lowers the bow. First of al,l do I have this the right way round, and second how on earth does this work??

Could really use Bob's knowledge on this rebuild.

I ordered 3/4", 1" and 1 1/4" boards of Bluewater 26, but we found that 1 1/4" is too thick, compared to boat bottom stringers.
Shipyard's Top Dog here, told me that everything thicker 3/4", is oversized as far as deck supporting structure; and he's aiming to screw laminated Coosa to stringers as it was with original plywood

What's good about this site is you have all his instructions in the old posts.

I do not recall talk of rudders affecting trim...maybe if bent outward they could lift or drag.

Those rudders look like they are in the right position. I don't think anyone would have moved them. You would probably be able to tell from the glass in the boat. If a repair was done or the rudders moved it probably will not match the factory glass.

Yeah I don't think anyone moved them but they look to poke past the stern a couple inches. Isn't that bad ie aeration etc.? I Always thought that the whole of the rudder had to be under the hull to work properly?

I’m with Tony I wouldn’t think those had been moved, but just for reference I have a stripped 1976 B31 Flybridge hull in my shop and I went by and measured the rudder flange tonight and that one was about 10 to 10.5 inches from the centerline of the rudder to the edge of the transom. The rudders are gone so I can’t speak to if they would overhang the transom. If that helps you any.

For comparison I also have a 1976 30’ Chris Craft Tournament Sportfish. it’s a similar hull to the B31 and the rudder centerline is about 7-8” from the transom on that boat. The original rudders were only long enough to reach the transom per the original Chris Craft design, but that seemed small to me so I had about 2.5” of plate welded to the bottom and trailing edge on those rudders when I redid the boat many years ago. So that 2.5 inches went past the transom and I didn’t recognize any negative effects, but I also had big trim tabs. The boat had a nice wake and steered well.

Some of the the Blackfin boats actually mount the rudder external to the boat, physically on the outside of the transom, so the entire rudder is behind the transom. I fished one of those once and don’t remember any issues.

There is a 28 in my yard with rudders installed and completely hanging behind the transom.
I'll ask the guy what effect this has on boat performance and will come back.

Hey I just replaced all my sub floor with coosa I used 3/4 around the edges and then laminated two 3/4 strips together to make the two middle beams.
definitely nice and strong

Thanks Fran. Only issue in Bermuda is that there isn't the large pool of knowledge on certain aspects of things.
