What is this?

Post by HotSpot »

Every season, I come across one or two of these down near the drain plug.

I have yet to see one connected to anything. Where the heck are all these coming from? The bend makes it look like some kind of clamp. The look of it seems to indicate it is very old maybe original to the boat. Wiring clamps? Old rub rail fittings? Anyone know what these are?

It is def a very old looking screw. If you keep coming across them then maybe one day the floor may drop or something....LOL

Looks like a sacrificial anode for a curved surface; on a tube? on an exhaust?
Unless it's a bronze thing with salt...in which case science has no answer as of yet!!

Shined right up. bronze. There are some marks on the back that make it look like it was clamped to something metallic.

Maybe the Scenario's deck theory is close to being correct. :o

I have the rear hawse pipes out of my boat when I went to gelcoat the gunnels, that piece looks a lot like the clamp which holds them down from the underside

You are on to something. I noticed that the port side corner hawse pipe was completely loose at the end of last season. Just held in by gravity. I assumed it was an adhesive failure and was ready to break out the caulk gun. If this is it, the other one is probably loose too or just hanging on by a couple threads. I’ll check it out when I get back to the boat. Thanks!

Hawse pipe clamps indeed!

Of the six total clamps, I had collected 5 over the years, and thankfully held on to them. Only one was still in place.

Thanks for the help, guys!

Back where it belongs...
