Scary thought without a doubt to just drop into a hole at sea. I guess if the rogue waves they say are true is a combination of waves kinda joining force and going high, then they could also go low...scary as the warning is not there, not that there is much of one with it going up...but at least my ...
Carl That first picture reminds me of a certain someone (who will remain nameless) who posted a picture of his project that had a tree growing out of the bilge. I can still remember Capt. Pat's reaction. What was to be a Hatteras Express became a Hatteras planter called The Tub. It's incredible how...
"how about a rum and coke?" :-D I don't think that guy understood the severity of their condition. Or he understood it all too well trying to add levity to the situation. It is something that makes me think. But not too much or I'd never leave the dock...mother nature can be more than scary at time...
Yes, to avoid rudder ventilation a rudder plate extending out from the transom, or a foil incorporated on top of the rudder seems to be part of the design...I'd think trim tabs could also work. Often nothing is as simple as "just move it" as one thing changed leads to another each having its implica...
I believe the issue was the rudders were too far back from the props, I think you want to keep that relationship between the two very similar. It usually seems to be just enough room to pull the prop off shaft. If you want to find the info I think it was a member from the Caribbean, maybe St. Lucia....
I have 5 or 6 on the back of my tower. Nice,k it keeps the net and a couple poles out of the cockpit, but I have to climb up a little to grab them. Fine when fishing with someone, when alone with light tackle I think twice about should I put pole in holder, loosen drag n climb up for the net or clim...
Much better pictures...the riser itself looks to be dry with a heat shield on the Yanmar and a Heat shield and Insulation Cover on the HDI. So yes that does increase the distance between waterline and exhaust outlet and being dry it cannot leak water from the surrounding jacket, that is good. The do...
Steve- I made my riser and shower head for 3 reasons. 1st- Increase the height of the exhaust outlet above the waterline reducing the risk of seawater backing up into the motor. 2nd- Larger diameter pasage to reduce back pressure. To some degree "possibly" scavenge exhaust for better performance. 3r...
This is how I figured what would work before starting- Top yellow lone is hull at zero degree Blue line is the shaft. Top right square dot is the center of the Output coupling on trans, at 6-1/8" above the hull. Bottom left verticle line is aft end of strut... Follow Blue line down to the square dot...
My buddy bought his boat a stones throw away form there at Cedar Point Marina on Kent Island, nice place and a great ride home.
Todd, it will be a real long ride for you. You'd better top it off before leaving.
Thank you for clarifying Bruce. Stock setups have to be good or the manufacturer would be out of business honoring constant warranties. I'd also believe they have a cutoff point where the design is "good enough". If they didn't, pricing would go through the roof and products would never hit the shel...
Shoot me down, but inspection for warranty is not taking into account if dumps leak water back towards the motor n turbo as that is a maintenance issue on the owner. Are they contemplating the odd wave with quirky roll n pitch of the boat that could possibly send seawater splashing back towards the ...
Looks great! What is the plans for the shower head? When I did mine I did not want to lose all that room by going up and over like your starboard side does, so did a dry riser with shower head like your port side. It was tight, but it fit and I now I get to keep all that real estate to play around t...
I have tried so many times to understand the reason why people buy these huge ribs. Yannis- Your area seems to be huge RIBS, my area is humongous "Center Consoles" with a dozen outboards hanging off the back. I too do not see the allure, but think I understand why people buy them. The reason is nei...
Spraying stuff on the turbo to stop corrosion is masking a problem, the turbo should not be seeing moisture to corrode. Two turbos freezing up on one side does raise eyebrows, but you offered little info as to why the last turbo froze up. Was it seeing seawater and corroding or something non related...
Daniel- Denis is a good friend of mine, smart like nobody's business, and you will not find a more honest person. The down side is he a bit of a trip from MD, although he did go to MD to check out the Cummins motors for me. If Neils person does not pan out, maybe a backup. If you tell him I gave you...

When I said that there is no safe way to start a motor at night, I meant there is a possibility of an accident with the prop, not that we can't pull the rope and start it.
Oh, gotcha. Ok then I have 2 words for you, Jet Drive.
Carl, you cannot have a battery in those little boats, especially the inflatables which are true inflatables, not RIB's. As for not knowing where I'm going, well, you got a point there, I mean you must know things!! haha!! Of course, you could... it's just not practical to have a battery at times. ...
I believe the most efficient is way down at displacement speed. If I'm not mistaken ships run at displacement speed unless Cruise or Defense Ships where fuel cost can take a back seat at times. I think if you look at a graph showing range as speed increases the slope heads down as speed goes up...as...
Not feasible for me...not sure about other boat designs. My motor box is considerably different. The motor box in the picture is two pieces, the side piece that stays attached and the main box that tilts open...Mine is one piece that goes under the side panels, so no hinge n tilt. Plus I have to acc...
, if you're using all the horsepower a 330 cummins produces at 2400 RPM, you are burning 10.6 GPH per engine. That means to be anywhere near 1.5 MPG, . Trace, time to add a variable, what happens when the motor is not using all the power available at 2400 rpm? My thought it is not burning the 10.6 ...
when you look at the published fuel burn curves for these engines published by the manufacturers, they never correlate with the fuel burn that is reported. I think that has to do with the variables. If they are testing in a boat, what kind of boat, how is it loaded, what is the temperature, and wha...
Pitch is like the threads on a screw (single screw/twin screw), each time you turn a screw it moves forward the distance of the pitch. A 10mm screw has a pitch of 1.5mm, turn the screw once it moves forward 1.5mm. 12" pitch on a propellor theoretically moves/propels the boat 12" forward. ( Sorry for...
Yannis- The 2nd picture is a custom modification. FBC and sportfish 31's are hindged at the rear base to the deck. Box is lifted front the front side up, past 90 degrees and lays on the deck for full access. While great to have full access the boxs can be heavy. Yes a rope n pulley or even a rope to...
I kinda shut down struts as they can fail, but if they do what you need a work around is a brace once lifted. Like the steal rod that holds your cars engine hood open.
Linear rails and the like I have played in my mind with to slide motor box covers out n back. Doable but I found overly combersomm.
Gulling style, very cool! Is it practical is another thing. Yes easy to open taking up less deck room. Access to outside looks great n easy, outboard side is fine if motors are cool and don’t mind climbing over. Lifting heavy from the outside look back breaking. However in the world of boats that st...
Danny- congratulations on your retirement! Mathew- your kids enjoy a Little Rock with that roll! They do not seem to mind at all. Yannis- Mother nature always wins, even Bertram weather takes its toll on our boats. Yes, we get back but screws n bolts loosen, if not secured it falls, and we find the ...
The 31 must be a little more economical than the 28. I think that Dug S. who runs 4LHA’s in his 31 has better figures than me. Either faster for the same consumption or more economical for the same speed. And now this 2.0 or even 2.5 mpg, these figures appear unattainable by any 28 I know of. Yanni...
Carl Our friend had a 68 Fly Bridge with a lower station. There was a noticeable ride difference between his boat and ours. Later on, I found out the boats differed in weight. His boat came through with the 440 Chryslers. What did you notice as being different with the 68's ride Tony? I think the s...
Tony, I knew the earlier boats were heavier, but didn't know when that changed and had no idea it was so much weight, it's literally a ton of weight. Thanks for the info.

Spec sheets are from 02, I don’t recall repowers looking to reduce shaft angle back then. I’d bet stock 15°angle. There was also a stock 10°angle setup in the early years. That was for gas motors with no reduction and small 15” wheels and 1-1/4” shafts. Personally I think it’s advantageous to speed,...
Carl, they may have erroneously taken the bare boat weight without the motors. Awfully fast too Are these numbers real? Well, Mastry is an engine dealer. I’m sure everything was optimized. I believe dry boat weight advertised was around 10,500 Yes, faster and more efficient than the real life numbe...
What jumps out at me is the 9600 pound boat weight.
My Express with gas motors, 162 gallon tank, and no water was 14000 pounds. I’d think if my boat went on a diet losing 4,400 pounds it would have much better performance numbers.
I fished with my father right up to and on the day, we put him in the Hospital. Start them young and it will be in their blood for ever. And on the complete opposite end of the spectrum my wife went fishing with my best bud n his wife on the day she was supposed to give birth with my daughter. Funn...
I agree there are times when it is better to pay than play. I'd have liked to pay for the whole job to be done, but I can't dance to the Piper's tune. LOL, I'm not exactly sure where I was going there. But I do know I can bend a piece of plastic to fit in the curved frame. What I do not know yet is ...
