Brewster,
Probably the culprits. I can see cleaning the condenser.
How do I get the vent hoses clean without ripping the boat apart with a chain saw to get at them?

John, Most of the time they are listed at $999. I bought this one at Wise sales for $869. The way I see it, that is one hell of a lot better price wise than putting in a permanent one. Plus if the power goes out at the house, I can keep the freezer cold. The thing runs 15 hours at 1/4 load. On just ...

20' Bertram Baron - What a boat!
Mark showed up in GLP yesterday in the now famous blue Bertram Baron that we all saw over in Oak Bluffs! He was kind enough to take me for a spin in some pretty rough Fishers Island sound water and wow, that is one hell of a boat! Solid as a rock, not a squeak, and it goes like a rocket! I can see h...

Air conditioning stink! How do I get rid of it?
When my dad fired up his AC this weekend, (with the new little honda genset!) it had a hell of a smell. Like Bilge.
But the bilge doesn't smell...
How do we clean it in order to get rid of the rank odor?
Anyone experience this, and have a cure?
Thanks,
Dug

Honda EU2000i genset experience I had
I bought a nice little genset, (the model in the title) and it came in last week. 48 lbs dry, small, and good looking anyway. This past weekend I fired it up and it is sweet. Quiet as a churchmouse, at 58 decibles while running wide open. It powers my whole boat without even breathing heavily so can...

I have always enjoyed the argument as to which is better, more fun, real boating, etc. It is always spirited, and in the past I used to get a bit tired of the accusation that powerboaters are not real boaters because they don't work with nature to get where they are going. There are ups and downs to...

All good advice. This fellow is interesting. He has had his boat for 8 years or so, and repowered with gas a year or so ago. He just bought a 30' Grady, and is on the fence as to whether he keeps or sells the Bertram. I tried to get as much info as possible, but the long and short of it is that he r...

Good people on LI for total restorations?
I got a call from a fellow named Kevin Gilgam who owns a 1974 31 on LI. He is interested in either selling or investing a good sum of $$$ in a full on restoration. He doesn't want to do it himself, so hiring is the way to go. I recommended Skip Helme as he was originally thinking to send the boat to...

Here is my plan. If it is up to a category 1, I go to the town dock in GLP and double lines, remove canvas etc., tape windows, because more than anything I am concerned about crap that flies in the wind. And the bilge pumps. Make sure insurance is paid and coverage is wide. Category 2-3 have the boa...

I heard over the weekend that there was some success getting to tuna that were not on the surface out at the canyon using downriggers. I have them, but have never used them. I didn't hear anything and was fishing that area yesterday. We left around 11 am to head home on the long rough slog as it was pretty bumpy. We did ok, taking 4 yellowfin, 5 mahi and 2 bonito. I would ask yourself what you want to cruise the boat at speedwise, and what speed you think the waters you travel will allow you to cruise at most of the time, and then I would size the engines appropriately. If you have a boat that will cruise at 30, but you can't use it at that speed, what good d...

Yup, I echo Mike's sentiments. I went knowing that I would spend some coin on the Vineyard. It is not a place known for being an inexpensive vacation locale. Chris, I am hearing that you only need to go as far as the 500 line. Plenty of yellowfin there. I have heard that the Dip and the Tails are "dead" by comparison. If you see life, stop and fish it. Jimmy, Last year you posted an awesome sequence of pictures of a B31 beating the tar out of some big seas on the way home from AC. Do you still have those pictures? Could you email me a copy? Todd, The 31 can ride better, depending on many things. I like the way mine rode vs. a friends b28. That is my opinion. Also my opinion that the 31 is roomier outside the cabin. Access, maneuverability, getting to the foredeck etc. is easier on my boat than on the 28. 60 grand will buy a damned nice...

A friend of mine in Niantic, CT has a Bertram 31 which is in decent shape.
