Those are the typical gas engine supports. They need to be unbolted and removed, saved for the wood or thrown out.

If your sure rpm is correct, 3900 is where Yanmar told us dealers to run them wot. Bertram stringers usually were roving over wood. Wood rotted out under most time. I heard a comment about side induction boxes allowing water intrusion. If designed and installed correctly, that is not going to happen. Yes 2:1 But like i said, the ratio is slightly different for the reverse rotation engine. Most 31 repowers using the 6LP used 2:1 gears because of the higher engine rpm. They are both the same hp. Engine blew cause nobody did the valve recall on those early engines. If your using zf gears, they will be slightly different ratios because of the reverse rotation. You can still time without the shunt, just keeps the advance out.
Timing may jump without the shunt some, but you can take the lowest reading on your indicator to get base timing at idle.

Sometimes the terminal I on the starter feeds ignition on start, trace back.

Someone also could have pulled two wires off feeding other items, electric choke, electric fuel pump, etc. Nothing should be fed from the + side of coil Back track wires to find out.

Just for checking, disconnect cable from trans lever and try movement again. I've had the selector arm/spool valve tighten up.

Also are you dual controls and if so do both cables go to engine or bridge control cables to lower controls and lower controls to engines?

Are you running one egt probe in the outlet, cause running rich can create burn in the manifold raising temps but cyl temps can be good. What about a faulty probe?

Did you try under load taking heat readings off each cylinder to see if they are with in range?

I've done one 31 with pockets. They were nothing like Penn Yann tunnels.

The last one was when Cummins came out with common rail QSB. I got the the first pair out of Cummins SE they were 370. Needed the pockets to turn the prop size. Boat performed excellent. I've posted pics of it in the past.

There was instead of a tube to carb on early engines glass bowl for just that reason Tony.
