Re: Looking at a 31 any thoughts
If you can fabricate, weld, rewire, etc., you can fiberglass. It's not that hard, and you can grind it out if you screw it up and start again. I ask here how many layers of whatever I need for a particular project, look around Capt Patrick's tips page, or research old posts and see what Capt Patrick ...

Re: Engine Cover Interference with tower!!!
I'd want to be able to open my boxes quickly if need be, and easily all the other times. I check oil and coolant and give the motors a good look over after each use, and sliding boxes would make this more difficult. I'd consider cutting the boxes to clear, and fiberglass what you cut to the wing pan...

Re: Questions for Gas-powered 31 owners
I had 454s in my 1969 FBC. Around .8 mpg or so. I never really checked. Once the secondaries kick in, the mpg plunged. Gassers are quiet, no dismal smell, and as I remember she cruised at around 20 knots at 3000. Make sure the B31 you’re looking at has had the tank replaced. Gassers are great, but t...

I thought that they were close to the 3208s, but don't really know. The point of my post that was a 31 can be too heavy. Crows Nest ran heavier int...

Re: Cummins 6CT or 6CTA in 31B?
Crows Nest has DD 8.2s (big motors). She also had a swim platform, half tower with heavy electronics, 8D batteries, a Westerbeke genny, and a Murray Bros. big chair. She sat about 3" lower than she does now. Everything is out but the motors--she uses 2 group 31s for starting. Although the head sea r...

Crows Nest (1977 FBC) had a big f'glass swim platform when I got her. I took it off and sold it (to each his own). As I remember, there were 2" x 2" or 3"x 3" marine ply backers with fender washers on each of the fasteners. That's it.

The screen on old Garmin on my B20 has become unreadable. I want to get a cheap chartplotter/fishfinder to replace it. Whatever I get, I'll need a thru hull or shoot through t-ducer. Agree. I used Corrosion X, and then resorted to cutting. I also replaced with bronze rudder bushings instead of bearings. There's no difference in feel, they're a lot simpler, they don't require a Corrosion X spray down every few months, and despite my neglect, they still look and work fine.

I agree with the above. In one of the pics near the end, it almost looks like there's a crack in a stringer. The boat needs a fair amount of work on the electric (wiring nuts?), plumbing, and basic organization. For example, I'd remove and glass over that thru-hull that Mike pointed out, and fix the...

I had a pre-oil embargo 1969 B31 and now have a 1977 B31. The Bertram 31 hull is solidly built regardless of year. I believe Captain Pat's view was that the bulkheads didn't really matter structurally. The stringers do matter. The hulls do "work" when running.

I personally wouldn’t redo a 30. Not a popular boat so I don’t think you’d ever get your money out of it. Jump to a 35. Or a 33. Or a 38. And I’d really think about Whaler’s B35.
That’s said, I live in Stevensville (where the 30 is according to the link) and can drop by and take a look.

I use the regular West ablative paint and it works fine. I used Petit for years until it cost about 3x what the West stuff costs (on sale). I don't paint the running gear, and just paint right over the bronze thru-hulls. I of course don't paint over the transducer. Its worked fine.
