Bob Lico, I see you mentioned plywood for the thru hull fittings. I just replaced the plywood with 3/4" pvc board. It does not rot and will last forever, not to be used in a structural format. Just squeeze it down, it goes nowhere.

Capt. Pat, you are correct, I don't know what I was thinking of. I picked up and delivered one to a friend of mine up here in the north while I was on vacation in Miami. He never did install it.

John F., I think that a co. called glasstech made the one you own. The bertram deck was solid fiberglass. I once replaced a deck about 28 years ago on another 31 that I owned and it was the standard 3 piece wood deck.

The 3 piece deck that bertram used to sell a few years ago. It was a fiberglass replacement. Another firm used to build them also, but the one bertram sold was totally fiberglass.

As for the Peninsular. My neighbor sold his boat with twin peninsulars. he had overheating problems. I think they were 300 hp. The nearest mechanic was quite a distance away. Service is always the big thing. I never knew anyone else with those engines, there must be a good reason.

Trted Barta is an OK guy in my book. He won't get near 300K for that boat. A young guy at my dock picked up a 2002 30' Albemarl for 70K with 3126 cats with 1200 hours and a 5K westerbeak gen set. He brought it up from Daytona Beach to NJ. A bank just wanted to get rid of it.

Sim, I had a 31 in 1975 and my kids were cutting bait, etc. on the naughyde deck. I had to remove the deck to replace the naughyde, it was not bad at all. I was concerned with the installation of the Bertram glass deck. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for your help, Ocean Yachts makes them also. I saw a 31 bert. with them last year and another boat in Cape May.By the way, I hear Ocean Yachts is pretty well closed up this winter. It might be a rumor only.

Russ, the boat is at Snug Harbor Marina. It is out of the water & blocked up. The boat has 1.5" shafts with 3 bladed props. The strut is original, it was bored out from the 13/8 ". The boat looks clean from the picture. That dock is about 2 miles from my house. I'll take a look at it tomorrow. I'm sure it is at the marina between Bree-ze lee and the Canyon Club.

As more of these Yanmars are installed, the public is getting secure with them. They were underestimated by many folks.
All I can say if they were not good, Hinkley would not be installing them on their boats.
I have no bias, I just wanted dependable service, which I have gotten.

Great engines. You won't regret it.
By the way, I think these engines were underestimated by a lot of folks.
There are more of them showing up on sites like Boat Diesel. com with a lot of hours. There was one guy who had 7700 hours on them with no rebuild. It was used commericially, which is a no no.

I would not run without the tabs. Putting 300 lbs. of ice in the boat with 231 gal of diesel and large fisherman makes for low stern.
My Bennett tabs are 12 x 30. I installed them myself.

My sons use google earth in the family business. They use the pictures to give estimates to survey properties. The pictures show the fence lines & trees. That tells them, how difficult the job will be and what to charge. This stuff was not available in my time, we had to go out and look at most jobs...

My son & I replaced all the windows 5 years ago. The one on the port side rear cracked within 2 months. I think it is time to replace it. The worst job on the boat was replacing the curved windows, we got the windows from American Products in Pompano Beach. The side windows are not that difficult.

If the wind is blowing 15 to 20 kts. from the SE your time will more than double. The waves stack up in a short time period. When you do get to Cape May, you will probably have to tighten all the fastners.
4' to 5' waves in Delaware Bay is no place to be if you are driving into the waves. Good Luck
