To Frank’s question, based on your props being 20 X 23, I’m thinking you have a 2:1 gear ratio. I had the 6LP-STE 315 HP, 2:1 gears and 20 X 23 props in my ‘73 Sportfisherman and cruised at 30 kts and top end at 34 kts.

Welcome aboard, SeaDog! The Bertram 20s typically came with the inline 6 cylinder GM 250 CI block rated at 165 HP, and they had a reputation for being both reliable and economical to run. There is also an inline 6 rated at 160 HP, but I do not know the specs or why the 5 HP difference. One B-20 Bahi...

I echo Frank's comment that Bruce's post is spot on. But the real answer is when you combine Bruce's real world facts with Carl's post: "it's too much when you stop smiling". The two posts sum it up perfectly: is it a "business" equation or is it a labor and passion of love.

According to everything I've seen on the topic of fuel tanks, the changeover year to increase fuel capacity from 170 to 220 gallons (hence elevating the deck a few inches) was 1972. So early '72 boats would have been fitted with the 170s until the inventory ran out, and later '72 boats the 220s.
