Also check your engine cable connector to your instruments. Often the connections , tach included, get corroded. To clean mine I did the following.
1) Remove all power( Shut your battery switch off)
2) Divorce your big connector to the guage cluster.
3) Take a very small wire brush and very small scraping tool as used in PC trace cutting. A small greenie screw rdiver may provide some degree of cleaning action. Clean all the pins (male) with these instruments. The female pins must be carefully examined and cleaned with a very samll wire brush(available at Radio Shack or other Electronic store-if any are left)Then continue with the female pins by using a scribe to increase the tension of bite.(gently push the female side to center to increase the connection bite.
4) Use a good anti-oxident to spray into the connectors after you have satisfied the cleaning with shiny pins and female connections. I use De-Oxit 5% solution by Caig Labs as it not only prevents corrosion but enhances conductivity by about 20 %. It really works . Available direct or via a distributor. You may also use Corrosion X sparingly but not real good here as it allows the connector seat to get loose (oiled up)defeating the locking feature. There are other cleaners / preseratives but I have never seen one as good as this one.Point being clean then preserve. It works and cured my persistant intermitant tach probelms as well as some other gauges as well.
Hope you fix your problem. Dave K
