On 31's with towers like mine I used a 1" solid 316 SS rod( Available from Small Parts Inc-Miami)as a standoff about 5 1/2 feet from the bottom. It affixes from the tower station hand railing to my Lee Seniors. In rough seas it is of utmost importance to have a very good backing like Patrick discussed at the base. This is where all the stress concentrates. Guying as discussed will help if you do not have a tower to install a standoff. That's my biggest fear is when I see those baby's move a little in Bertram seas. I had one come down shortly after I bought the boat.Needless to say I then reverted to a better base installation than the former Stewart had. Secure those babies. Dave K
