Joe,
You need as thick and as large, (sq in), backing plates as you can stuff into the flybridge wings. I'd recommend at least 1/2" plywood & at least 12"x12". The larger the sq in, the more the plate will spread the load. The thicker, the stiffer...
You can install with fast set 4200 or 5200. Once set up, (about 12 hrs), redrill your holes & use fender washers between the nuts and plywood.
