David:
I put my 1975 FBC with gassers in the water in early April. I have been through a quite a few tanks already. I am playing the "what ever happens, happens" approach. It is an easier decision for me because the engines have close to 4,000 hours on them. They run great, but I need diesels at some point and putting the boat of the shelf just seems like an even bigger waste of money.
So far so good except, last week after fishing I had the boat at the dock unloading everything and after about 20 minutes of being shut down I fired the motors and pushed off. The starboard motor died about 40 feet from the dock while trying to maneuver. It would not restart and with the 15 to 20 knot wind I could not get the boat around. A little scary as the rocks were fast approaching, but got it back on the mooring with out any damage. Long story short, the electric fuel pump was stuck with Black Goo. Changed the water separators, in-line fuel filters, added two more filters, and cleaned the fuel pump. Well it’s working again. I actually got 31.7 Knots out of it with 9 people on board (almost empty tank though), I love the way the boat feels at that speed. My new theory is why not blow the motors up with a grin on my face rather than letting the black goo kill it. “Rather die while I’m living than live while I dead” – J Buffet. Besides, my theory also states that if I run the gas through the engine fast enough, it can’t stick to anything…
