Balance and weight are the number one priority in any type of racing environment.
Weight in the aft is what you need and all the problem 31's I've been on have been nose heavy.
That's one reason why heavy big HP engines don't work in the 31 besides having to add prop pockets.
When the props are turning outboard, it does add some lift to the aft end.
The faster you go the more lift.
The more lift, the better chance of chine walking. This can be corrected sometimes by having the props turn inboard.
The 31 is capable of speeds over 35.
In the pleasure boat configuration this would be a recommended max speed to shoot for.As much as I like the 31, having been in 4' seas many times, running mid 20's in speed was just stupid unless you wanted to get soaked and beat your brains out.
I would venture to say if you poll'd all the 31 owners, the average cruise speed run would be 19 to 21 knots in typical sea conditions.
