i dug out my copy of SEARACE by John Crouse-some consider to be the definitive work on the history of powerboat racing.
1961 Miami-Nassau Race--- 31' GLASS MOPPIE averaged 42.5 MPH over 184 miles
1961 Long Island Marathon--31' GLASS MOPPIE averaged 44MPH over 280 miles
1962 Miami-Nassau Race----25' AOKONE average 49.7 MPH over 184 miles
1963 Miami-Nassau Race---25' MONA LOU--averaged 55.2 MPH over 184 miles
1963 Round Nassau--25' MONA LOU--averaged 44.8 MPH over 500 miles
1964 Long Island Marathon--25' MONA LOU--averaged 48 MPH over 245 miles
1964 Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio--31' LUCKY MOPPIE--averaged 46.9 MPH over 186 miles
1964 Cowes--31' LUCKY MOPPIE--averaged 48.6 MPH over 188 miles
1964 Great Lales Regatta---25' MONA LOU--averaged 60 MPH over 100 miles
above are the average speeds of a 25 and 31 bertram probably in less than ideal condiions.
the 25' was powered by twin outdrives---the 31 twin inboards ---some of the 31 race boats utilized v-drives to get the motor weight further aft.
although these were race boats the 31's usually had a low profile cabin deck-and enough fuel to finish the race.
i have no records--the 31's -i believe that they were using the short strut that was on early production boats and 1:1 transmissions.
i have a gass flybridge boat and have never expierenced the squirrely bow steer that some of the higher HP diesel boats are having---i believe it is not caused by shaft angle-but by the large props the diesels are turning which is causing stern lift. althogh i can not approach the speeds of the race boats my boat will run over 40 mph with no adverse handling.
