The real reason Moppie won was because of her ability to maintain reasonable speeds in very rough conditions. The only other finisher that day was a Ray Hunt 26 footer. I believe this was the self-same boat that inspired Dick Bertram to commission the original Moppie. All the rest dropped out and had to finish the following day.

P.S. I can't see how the tunnels would do anything but add drag. There would be a low pressure area on the hull in the area of the tunnels which translates to slow. If they serve another purpose, like making room for bigger wheels for big Diesels, fine. But in and of themselves I don't think they would be a go-fast mod. If nothing else there is more surface area drag.
