I have a '73 28 in San Diego with Ford 351's tuned with a clean bottom and it will only turn 3,400 rpms, not the designed 4,200. I am told California has had 5.7% ethanol for three years. The gas docks claim they dont know of anyone who has experienced any problem. I'm afraid they're wrong.
My mechanic has not considered fuel contamination or tank deterioration as a possible cause yet. Does anyone know if the fuel can be tested and, if so, who can do it. The tank is full of $4.00 gas! I am going to have him look for the "black sludge" under the carbs next. If its there, whats next? Can the engines be saved without rebuilding them?
Does anyone have even a ballpark figure for removal and replacement of the tank? I raised the performance issue with one of the biggest boat yards in San Diego and they never mentioned the ethanol issue. Is everyone out west just clueless about this problem?
