replacing a cutlass with the shaft in place requires the use of a press made for that.
Any decent yard will have one that you could borrow or rent.
One slip of a hammer with the pipe method and you've dinged the shaft.Do yourself a favor if you can't get the press, pull the shaft and use a sawz all to cut the old bearing in two.
Clean the inside of the strut and make sure the set screws are out.Put the new cutlass in the freezer over night to shrink it at the yard.
Install the bearing and set screws and reinsert the shaft.
