I have to think Al means to replace an existing cutlass with a new one with the shaft in place. I had to turn down a piece of pipe to a diameter slightly smaller than the cutlass case to drive out the old one. On install it was as Capt. Patrick discribed, except the oak had a 1 1/2" hole cut into it.
