Al,
Use a block of wood, at least 1 1/2" thick, with the grain perpendicular to the length of the bearing. Try to find a good piece of hard wood like oak... Use a 3 lb machinist sledge rather than a wimpy ball peen.
Lighty grease the bearings & pack them in ice for at least 10 minutes.
Heat the strut tube to the point that the paint starts to char. If your struts are bare, wad up a piece of paper and stuff into the tube. When the paper starts smoking stop heating.
Insert the cold bearing into the hot tube, hold the block of wood against the end of the bearing and use firm taps with the sledge.
Should go pretty quick...
Be sure that your set screws are in good shape before driving in the bearing, tap them out to the next size up if necessary.
