Fish Killer leads billfish tournament
BY TOMMY BRASWELL
The Post and CourierMOUNT PLEASANT - The smallest boat in the tournament raced out to the first-day lead in the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina Billfish Tournament.
Fish Killer, a 25-foot Bertram owned by Jim Cline of Murrells Inlet, released two blue marlin and a sailfish to accumulate 700 points in the third event in the South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series.
"It was an adventure," Cline said of the tournament's opening day. Only two other people were on the boat, his 11-year-old daughter, Ashley, and his regular fishing partner, Neil Adams.
Cline caught and released the first blue just after 9 a.m., a fish he estimated at 200 pounds. A short time later, Adams fought a much larger fish to the boat for a release. Then just before 1 p.m., Ashley Cline caught a sailfish on just her second trip offshore.
Juncanewt, owned by John Cagle of Mount Pleasant, had one blue marlin and one sailfish for 400 points and was second based on time of catch. Caramba, owned by Bob Faith of Mount Pleasant, also had a blue marlin and sailfish, but Caramba's points were accumulated after Juncanewt's.
Scoring in the series is one point per pound for blue marlin weighed (minimum size 115 inches), 300 points for blue marlin released, 150 points for white marlin released and 100 points for sailfish released.
The 58 boats fishing the tournament enjoyed an outstanding day, releasing a total of 22 billfish: a dozen blue marlin, nine sailfish and one white marlin.
The leaders in the non-billfish categories include: tuna, Louis Costa, Sportsman, 50.1 pounds; wahoo, Chad McClure, Hap Hazard, 50.0 pounds; and dolphin, Jennifer Jones, Billistic, 44.6 pounds.
The tournament continues through Saturday, with boats allowed to fish two out of three days, captain's choice. Today's weigh-in runs from 5-8 p.m., and Saturday's weigh-in will run from 5-7 p.m.

Fish Killer, Sportin' Lifecash in at billfish tourney
BY TOMMY BRASWELL
The Post and CourierMOUNT PLEASANT - Saturday proved to be an adventurous day for the fleet fishing the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina Billfish Tournament, with Fish Killer clinching first-place with its third blue marlin the tournament and Sportin' Life coming from out of the pack with a blue marlin and white marlin to earn the biggest payday, through the optional tournament levels.
Fish Killer, a 25-foot Bertram owned by Jim Cline of Murrells Inlet, finished the tournament with three blue marlin and a sailfish for a total of 1,000 points. Cline and crew member Neil Adams earned the $20,000 first-place check and another $2,000 for the conservation award.
Sportin' Life, owned by Manley Eubank of Charleston and captained by Bobby Garmany, took home the most money. Sportin' Life's 750-point total (two blue marlin and one white marlin) was worth $15,000 from the regular tournament division plus another $47,732.25 from the optional release point tournament levels.
Caramba, owned by Bob Faith of Mount Pleasant and captained by Dale Lackey, finished third with 700 points and won $10,000, plus an additional $18,441.64 from the optional tournament level.
Juncanewt, owned by John Cagle of Mount Pleasant, also had 700 points slipped to fourth based on time of catch and won $17,202.47 from the optional tournament level.
Scoring in the series is one point per pound for blue marlin weighed (minimum size 115 inches), 300 points for blue marlin released, 150 points for white marlin released and 100 points for sailfish released
Cline said conditions were rainy and rough early on Saturday and he left his 11-year-old daughter home after she caught her first sailfish Thursday. He and Adams had three billfish strikes, finally hooking up for a brief battle the third time. They quickly got the leader to the rod tip and were reaching for it when the fish surged away, jumped and threw the hook.
He was uncertain whether that constituted a released fish until late that afternoon when he explained the story to tournament officials. Under South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series rules, a billfish is considered caught "when the leader is brought within the grasp of the mate or the end of the leader is wound to the rod tip."
"I wasn't sure. Some tournaments it's when the fish is wired and some tournaments is when the leader is reeled to the rod tip. I would much rather let them make the decision," he said.
Sportin' Life also enjoyed a brief, but productive flurry of activity. Eubank hooked and fought a nice white marlin and while the crew was trying to get photos of the fish, Garmany noticed a blue marlin had come up on one of the teasers. He called out to the crew in the cockpit and put the boat in gear and Chris Wilson hooked the marlin.
"It was crazy. It was one of those once in a lifetime doubles," Garmany said.
The fleet released seven blue marlin, three white marlin and three sailfish Saturday, bringing the week's total to 48 billfish, including 31 blue marlin.
In the non-billfish categories, which paid $2,000 each, Peden Dunn, aboard Jabez, had the top dolphin, 51.2 pounds; Louis Costa, aboard Sportsman, had the top tuna, 50.1 pounds; and Mark Spinner, aboard Haphazard, had the top wahoo, 58.0 pounds.
Fourteen-year-old Kasey Dantzler, aboard Dough Boy, won both the top lady and youth angler awards for a blue marlin release Thursday. Michael Gianelli, aboard Juncanewt, was the outstanding angler with two blue marlin releases.
The next Governor's Cup event is the Bohicket Marina Invitational Billfish Tournament, which will be fished June 15-17.
