Exhaust Thru Hull

I need to replace a slotted cap screw with bolt on one of my exhaust thru hull's. The thru hull itself looks fine. Problem is, I can't tell what type of metal the thru huill is so that I can match it with the right metal fastener. The thru hull is or at least appears to be original equipwent on my '73. I can find plenty of slotted stainless steel 1 inchers, but I'm concerned that the thru hull may be bronze. Then, should I use brass?
