I've actually spoken with Lee Dana. He told me that in searching through Bertram's archives that they used the same resin on all tanks all years. My only question is whether or not the company that made the resin changed the formula but kept the same name?
I've also spoken with Don Flippen who is the current Director of Customer Support at Bertram. He told me that there was a switch "sometime" in the mid-80's. In addition, I spoke with Danny Baez at Hightide who used to work for Bertram and he also mentioned the "sometime" in the mid-80's change. Finally, another individual from the 33 site spoke with Geney Menedez a former and current Bertram employee who also said there was a switch in the mid 80's.
So, that's 3 for the mid-80's change and 1 against, though the 1 against seems to have proof to bakc up his argument. All 4 have had some sort of connection with Bertram over the years. Whom to believe?
Finally, Bertram never used aluminum tanks on any of their smaller boats. They were all fiberglass tanks. I think they used aluminum on some of the bigger boats (not sure of the size but I'm pretty sure that anything up to 46 feet has fiberglass).
So the bottom line in your case is your either all right (as your boat is an 88), or you're screwed like the rest of us. I hear misery loves company.
Regards,
Doug L.
