I have had the tank problem for several years. The engines will tell you you have a problem if you can read the signs. Hard starting, backfiring excessive fuel usage then stuck valves and bent rods.
Since you know what to look for/listen for you can sort of take a wait and see approach. I would start pulling plugs and checking for goo at the first sign of symptoms and definately not wait till you get into stuck valve area.
As to clean filters, always a good idea to check them, but won't have much effect as the resin is in solution and passes right by them, I have 1 micron filters with a second stage to remove Tar and Varnish and I still had problem.
One thing I can say, initailly you will get a flood of crap coming out of the tank that will bog down filter, then nothing else but fuel and the real problem starts.
Fuel will tank on a funky brown color and a stench, something to look for.
As I said this is my 3rd year with problem and tank was not leaking at all, so other then rebuilding engines, new carbs and a ton of time it was not a saftey issue, I was alway able to limp back to dock.
