In Response To: 88 B28 & Ethanol (Hunter)

Hunter: The subject has been beat to death, but for "newer" boats like yours and my 1985 B28 with the 240 gallon tank, nothing I have seen is conclusive. Bertram does not seem to have good records and there is nothing in the factory labeling which would differentiate good from bad tanks. I suspect that if you look on the top of your tank under the center aft hatch, you will see the factory label with date of mfr and other info. It will probably say "not for methyl fuels". Mine says it, another 1988 B28 I have looked at says it and my Dad's '73 B35 tank says the same thing. Posts on other sites have quoted Lee Dana, former Bertram chief engineer as saying that his review of old records at Bertram indicates that the same resin was used into the '90s. My conclusion is that nobody knows for sure. I have good-running original Merc 260's in my boat and am going to watch closely for any sign of a problem. I really don't want to rip out a perfectly good tank. Good Luck, Leigh
