I used the Devtar 5A and the aluma prep. It went on well, and it is a high build epoxy, so you can put many coats on. I probably won't know how well it worked for many years, but I was very happy with it during the application process. I'd certainly use it again, and continue to recommend it until I hear differently. Attached is pic of the application process.
I wouldn't recommend having a shop do the coating. The bond strength is heavily dependent on the care taken in preparing the metal. The overall resilience is also affected by the number of coats you have the time to put on.
I just can't imagine that a metal fabrication shop will be able to take the care and time neccessary to make sure it is done right. They are typically welders not painters, and they aren't likely to follow your instructions. Their job is to get the tank out, and spending an extra couple hours rubbing it down with scotch brite pads water and acid is not likely to happen the way you hoped.
I spent about a week preping and coating my tank.
Not hard work, but every day or so, I had to put another coat on...
If for nothing else, do it yourself, so you have the comfort of knowing it was done the way it should be.
best of luck,
Mike Dolan
