In Response To: Painting Window Frames? (Kevin)

I removed the windows from My 31 Express last summer and painted them. After removing the windows from the boat I stripped the frames down to the bare extrusions. I took out the glass removed all of the screws then cleaned by grinding and added weld metal to areas damaged by corrosion. Then I used a small shop sandblaster to completely sandblast the entire frame. Next I used Bondo to smooth small defective areas. Finally I used a 2 part epoxy primer paint manufactured by BLP Mobile paints and a top coat of BLP 2 part catalyzed Urethane with an additive that produced an eggshell finish. The top coat was black. I also did the same thing with the cabin windows. I am pleased with the results. My thoughts on painting the frames silver is that after applying the color coat you should apply a 2 part catalyzed urethane clear. I understand that the urethane has excellent resistance to sunlight. I asked a guy in Florida about power coat and he told me that he tried it before and the heat from the oven causes any corrosion to pop and really screw up the power coat. He suggested paint.....a lot of work but looks pretty good in the end.
