Don't get nuts over the water in the bilge. There is always going to be some. Unless you use a sponge like our brother, Wayne. He's in California and that's the way it is out there.
But getting serious,I have the standard factory set up. One forward with an on-off and manual switch with the float and pump on the same level. If the forward pump fails, the aft pump goes on finally and man, the water is high. Then after a few more inches of water, the high water alarm goes off.
I also use the old packing method on the shafts. They just drip a little. I check them often.
After a trip and just before I leave the boat, I ALWAYS check the bilge. There should be very , very little water in the boat.
And another thing, the bilge pump aft better not come on during a run!
Boy, is it raining here right now....
