I've had discussions with some of the Bertram factory folks over the last few years about putting the B31 back into production. I'm very passionate about the B31 being the most perfectly proportioned boat ever built. And a boat that has proved for over 45 years that it is functional and lasts, catches fish, is sexy, wash & wear, holds value. Most of us that come to this sandbox own them and feel the same way.
But she is a 31 foot day boat. Sure, a lot of us have tricked out ours and can stay a few days on them, but she's a day boat. The economic reality is that it is probably not feasible to produce a new B31. My guess it would have to sell in the mid to high 300 range, easy top 400 with options most of us would want. Maybe could be produced in a stripped down "kit" boat, hull and deck/f.b. cap for someone else to finish, and that would keep the hull form, the Hood Ornament of Bertram, on the water. On the other hand, there are still a helluva lot of Bertram 31s on the water, looking good as ever, never wearing out. Crazies like me still pour money in them, take them fishing, and for a lot less than any new boat in the class.
24 of us are going to the Tropic Star June 17th to fish on them. The Tropic Star ads feature the form of the B31. Why? Because the mere sight of her conjures up the image of what we are and want to be.
What you factory guys have to say? Joe, Don, Kim?
