Bill,
I have replaced the original pump platform in Triton II once already with a narrower one to lower the switch and pump and reduce the amount of water accumulating in the forward bilge. Success was moderate. The platform height added to the switch cut-off height still leaves more water than I'd like. Planning a still narrower platform to get even lower. (platform is fully glassed plywood tabbed into the bilge)
More important is that you shouldn't place the switch lower than the pump since that will keep the pump running even though it is not drawing water. A burned out pump, or worse, is the ultimate result. Both switch and pump should be on the same level.
There is also the option of a "housekeeping" pump located as low as possible in the bilge. This is usually a 500GPH model with integral float switch that just keeps the resident water as low as possible. In the case of a real leak, the larger pump will take over and, hopefully, provide time to effect a repair.
Yeah guys, I know, dripless packings and a drain system for the deck hatches would eliminate 90% of the water in the first place!
Jerry
