Yes a notched trowel would work best. Thinking back I once dated a girl we used to call toothed spreader, but thats another story.
an adhesive that was meant for wood and only patially in love with fiberglass would make for an easier clean up if you needed to repair or replace down the road. I install floors of all kinds over concrete and wood so I really can't recommend an adhesive for fibreglass. Do some research, maybe a boaters world catalog would have some info on this subject.
