Actually the refineries DO have alternatives. They probably would not go back to MBTE because it is banned in most states, but they can still use TAME and ETBE. Only these two oxygenators don't get tax breaks for them. Maybe if the cost of the ethanol goes higer than the benefit of the tax breaks they would use them.
By the way, everyone in the media is jumping on the Brazil thing, but did you notice that they always mention that the ethanol pumpis right next to a pump for gasoline? Their gas is more expensive than their ethanol, but it IS STILL available for those who want or need to burn it instead.
Why can't we (the USA)do that and make everyone happy?
