Chris,
I too am a 38' widebody owner. A marina neighbor of mine (Jim Covell) with a '70 38 Widebody "Sea Bear" has repowered with B-series cummins (370 mechanicals) and is quite happy with them. He cruses around 19 Knots at 19 GPH. There are a few boats in So Cal with B series and others around the country. I have not heard of any loading/duribility issues at all (have talked wiht multiple owners) - gear ratio and prop selection are important. If you want to cruse at 25+knots then you really need to move up to the C series. The B's work well for a 19-20 knot cruse.

The lighter B series (vs C) will provide better fuel economy with the widebody hull - especailly if you carry extra fuel, etc. The common rail engines further increase fuel economy especially at low speeds for long distance runs (e.g., So Cal to Costa Rica).

I have performance curves for "Sea Bear" with 370Bs which I can provide to you (the info is on my machine at work). I can also put you in contact with the owner, I am sure Jim would be delited to talk with you.
