This site functions cause well because we are all in the same boat (pun intended)
My .02 on the surveyor thing. My thought line on a surveyor is you want to pick one who thinks similiar to the way you do and without ties to the seller/broker. I have always thought of a surveyor as a professional opinion, and opinions can vary dramatically. I would sit down with the guy and tell him what I want in a boat, what I would be willing to take on in terms of projects and what I would not consider okay projects for me to deal with. Get some feedback from him before proceeding.
Now that the deed is done, kind of hard to go back and say his opinion was wrong, especially to what is servicable? If one of my mounts are really rusted up bad I would chuck'em, my buddy would spend a day taking it apart wire brushing every inch, prime and paint.
