Well, Raz, like you said, there are a wide range of answers. Start with the undisputed principle that if it flies, floats, or f**ks, rent it.
For starters, you can't buy much of a diesel B31 for 70K nowdays. Figure about 85-100 for one that has good iron, then bump that up another 15 or so for one in real good 'turn key' shape with the cool upgrades, like glass decks, glassed in front, half tower, nice re-done interior, genset, a/c, etc.
Your upkeep costs will depend largely on how good the iron is. The money is in the iron. A Cummins 6BTA 250 or 300 reman is about 15k. A ZF 220 gear is about 3. Then you have to get someone to put it in unless you are a mechanic, and oh yeah, get it to Mexico.
Regurar costs are insurance, here in the US I pay about 2500 for 120K hull and 500K liability on AJ, a little to add the liability to my umbrella. Mexico is different. Dockage is whatever the local market demands. Haulouts every year, figure 500 bucks, bottom paint is expensive, but labor is cheap south of the bordar.
My respectful view is that you are short on the money end looking at a diesel B31. A good gas B31 can be had for under 50, lots of them out there, really good values. Unless you go with the new hi performance gas engines, an ole 350 c.i. Chevy marine conversion is like 3 or 4K long block, and Mexicans can work on them.
Anyway, my views, and go for it.
