Sorry, Doug, but Chiles is right. Here is a link to the ABYC FAQ page that answers the question about their standards for SST tanks.
Personally I don't agree, but unfortunatley there it is....down near the bottom of the page. Look under the title "WINTER 2001."
The comment that they have to be "...cylindrical with domed ends." and that there is no restriction on the size of a diesel sst tank makes me think they are worried more about pressure build-up than corrosion or weld failure. I don't understand that.

Personally I would still use a sst tank in my own boat if/when it comes to it, and I would definately talk to Doug about fabricating it.

Doug and others who are fabricating in SST should work with ABYC and change their minds on this one. Trying to pass off the objections expressed on this board as unfounded chatter simply doesn't change the facts.

I haven't found a first-hand copy of the C.G. regs that Chiles sited, but I don't doubt that what he reports on that is also correct.

So, Doug, If you are at least still reading here on this board I am sorry; Sorry to miss your input; Sorry that we pissed you off; sorry that the ABYC regs and the C.G. regs are not to your liking; but I'm not 'diss'n you. I am actually on your side on this one. Direct your anger and fruustration to the ABYC and the U.S.C.G. Meanwhile you need to inform your customers honestly and truthfully and let them decide for themselves.
