there are pro`s and con on just about everything we do to upgrade our 31 bertram, removeing the cowl vents is not one of them.downright stupidity and dangerous to keep if your restoring the boat or repowering.to utilize outriggers or shark fish you should have 3 rod holders on each side, cowl vents prevent this as well as a trip hazzard.
the rear bulkhead has a 10" piece that ties into the gunnels on port and starboard side down to the bulkhead in front of the fuel tank.first step is to make a large letter "D" out of cardboard.make it extend fron 1" below the gunnel to the level of the cockpit floor.i am not going to explain the air flow of a backwards d compare to a square or round trust me on this.the cockpit sides have a 2" cut removed along both sides of cock pit, make a half round on beginning and end of cut. the air flowing thru this cut will be the cleanest air available on the boat (lowest salt water content) and will accelerate thru the "D" to the air cleaner, like a .3lb positive air pressure.the added and most important feature is a toe kick to place your feet under when reaching over the sides trying to haul in the big one.
