The position of the strut determines the shaft position. You first align the strut/shaft to the shaft log, by adjusting the strut position, and then the engine to the shaft. If I were to move the engine enough to center the shaft in the log, the shaft would be bent, and/or the cutlass bearing would be twisted sideways in it's race.
Seemingly they didn't do this correctly at the factory, or perhaps an previous owner bent and replaced the strut, and did not align it right. I don't know who but someone screwed the pooch on this one.
So to get the shaft and shaft log in alignment with each other, I have to move the strut (and shaft with it), and then adjust the engine to match, in that order.
Basically until I'm willing to pull the boat for a spell- not until this winter, if I can help it- I'm stuck with the status quo.
