Chiles, sure, the turbo gets hot and if the bearings and seals fail it could spray oil and catch on fire. I guess my point here is that I don't want any automatic system on the boat to shut my engines down without me making or confirming that decision. Sure, bells, horns, flashing lights to warn me of a problem, but don't shut my engines down automatically - let me make that decision. The prosepect of crossing the bow of a 100,000 ton tanker bearing down on me at 18 kts. and my engines decideing to shut down for whatever reason does not appeal to me. The huge ship accident in New Orleans a few years ago where the ship's engine shut down automatically (turned out a fault in the shutdown system, not the engine) and the river current sent her into a riverside shopping mall causing many to revert to room temp. is an example.
Anything we do on the boat is a crap shoot. To me its just a matter of fudging the odds. The enemy of good is better most of the time.....
