While I will always bow down to the experience of UV, I learned something from my surveyor that I think makes sense.
My surveyor told me that in his experience, there are more diesel turbo failures that cause fires then many people think. He said that when it happens, oil from the cooling / lube spray over the overheated or damaged turbo charger and become the source for ignition. Without the shutdown, the engine will continue to run spraying oil on the fire.
I have no first hand experience with this that the surveyor could have just been handing me a line, but in a way... it makes sense to me.
If you don't have turbo's then I think it is much less of an issue.
